Editor's note
Every camera goes through the same five-criteria scoring method before it appears on this site, and the weightings never change between models.
I'm William Madden, and I've been testing action cameras since 2019 — here's exactly how the method works, and what it doesn't change.

12 routesAction Camera Auditor: Checked Specifications, Dated Prices, Real Use Cases
Action cameras are expensive, the marketing is unusually bad, and "8K" means at least four different things depending on whose box it's printed on. Action Camera Auditor exists to do the boring part properly: find the number, trace it to the manufacturer, write down the date we checked it, and re-check it when it moves.
That matters more than it sounds. Half the comparison content online is a spec table someone copied from a press release two years ago. Prices on this site carry the date they were verified — as of this update, 1 September 2026, the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 is $309.99, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is $319.00 and the GoPro HERO13 Black is $379.99. Those three numbers alone invalidate most of the buying advice currently ranking for "best action camera", because for years the Ace Pro 2 was the expensive option and now it is the cheapest of the three.
We also tell you when a manufacturer doesn't publish something. Insta360 states 13.5 stops of dynamic range for the Ace Pro 2 and an operating range of −20°C to 45°C. DJI and GoPro publish neither figure for their equivalents. That doesn't make their cameras worse — it means you're taking those properties on trust with them and not with Insta360, and that distinction is worth knowing.
Our coverage spans Insta360, DJI, GoPro and the budget brands, plus the ecosystem: mounts, microphones, ND filters, memory cards and mobile editing apps. Where a competing camera wins a criterion we name it and say by how much — you'll find DJI recommended over Insta360 on this site for depth rating (20m against 12m), for multi-day battery (240 minutes against 180) and for lightest carry weight (146g against 184g), and GoPro recommended for chest-mounted POV stabilisation. Those recommendations exist because the specifications support them.
Two areas where we deliberately refuse to guess: AKASO and most sub-$150 brands publish almost no hard specifications — no sensor size, no weight, no battery figures — and we say so rather than filling the gaps. And where two official sources disagree, we print both. Insta360's own page lists the Ace Pro 2 at 184g; B&H lists 177.2g. We use 184g, the manufacturer's figure, and we tell you about the other one.
