Your headlamp is on, the canopy has taken the moon, and the shot you came for — the ridge at last light, the campfire, the night surf session — is the exact moment most action cameras turn to porridge. Grain, smeared detail, colour that dies: this is where spec sheets lie hardest and where the price difference between cameras finally justifies itself.
2026 changed the shape of this comparison, and any low-light guide that hasn't noticed is out of date. DJI's Osmo Action 6 arrived with a 1/1.1-inch sensor and a variable f/2–f/4 aperture. GoPro skipped the HERO14 entirely and launched the MISSION 1 series with a 1"-type 50MP sensor. Both of those sensors are physically larger than the Insta360 Ace Pro 2's 1/1.3-inch. If you read a page claiming Insta360 has the biggest sensor in action cameras, that page is describing 2025.
Short answer: the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 is still the action camera we'd buy for low light in 2026, but for reasons that have nothing to do with owning the biggest sensor. It is the only one of the three with a named, dedicated low-light video mode (PureVideo), the only one that publishes a dynamic-range figure at all (13.5 stops), and it pairs a 1/1.3-inch sensor with the widest fixed aperture here, a Leica SUMMARIT F2.6 lens. It also costs $309.99 against $436.00 for the DJI Osmo Action 6 and $499.99 for the GoPro MISSION 1. If sensor area alone decides it for you, buy the DJI — that is an honest answer to an honest question, and we say so below.

Read the "not published" column count before anything else, because it is the story of this page. Of these five cameras, one publishes a dynamic-range figure and one names a low-light video mode, and it is the same camera. That does not prove the Ace Pro 2 produces the cleanest image in every scene — it proves Insta360 is the only manufacturer willing to be held to a number. With DJI and GoPro you are trusting the processing and nothing else.
The other thing to take from the table: sensor size no longer sorts this list. DJI's 1/1.1-inch and GoPro's 1"-type are both bigger than the Ace Pro 2's 1/1.3-inch. What sorts the list is what each manufacturer does with the sensor, and what they charge for it.
01Insta360 Ace Pro 2 — Best Action Camera for Low Light

Start with what the Ace Pro 2 does not have: the biggest sensor. At 1/1.3 inches it is smaller than the DJI Osmo Action 6's 1/1.1-inch and smaller than the GoPro MISSION 1's 1"-type. Anyone telling you otherwise is quoting last year's line-up. Sensor area is real physics and Insta360 is third of three on it here.
What it has instead is the only complete low-light story on the market.
A named mode. PureVideo is a dedicated low-light video mode, and it is the only one in this comparison — DJI publishes no equivalent named mode for the Action 6, and GoPro publishes none for MISSION 1. A named mode is not automatically better than unnamed processing, but it is a mode you can switch on deliberately when the light goes, rather than hoping the auto exposure works it out.
A published number. 13.5 stops of dynamic range. Nobody else here publishes any figure at all. In the dark, dynamic range is what keeps a headlamp beam from clipping to white while the shadows still hold detail, and it is the single most useful published spec on this page precisely because it is the only one that is uncontested.
The widest fixed aperture here. The Leica SUMMARIT F2.6 lens gathers more light than the Action 5 Pro's f/2.8 or the HERO13 Black's unpublished figure. DJI's Action 6 goes wider at f/2 — with the important caveat that its aperture is variable f/2–f/4, so what you actually get depends on which end the camera picks.
And the price. $309.99, against $436.00 for the Action 6 and $499.99 for MISSION 1. That is the argument that makes the sensor concession survivable: you are not being asked to accept a smaller sensor for the same money, you are being asked to accept it for $126 less than the DJI and $190 less than the GoPro.
Practical extras that matter after dark: the 2.5-inch flip screen at 900 nits for framing yourself when you can't see the frame, 8K30 for cropping into a scene you can't reshoot, 18 minutes to 80% charge, and a published −20°C to 45°C operating range — cold and dark usually arrive together.

This is the camera that ended Insta360's sensor advantage, and it deserves to be said plainly. The Action 6 uses a 1/1.1-inch square 38MP sensor — physically larger than the Ace Pro 2's 1/1.3-inch — behind a variable f/2–f/4 aperture, which no other action camera in this comparison has at all. Wide open at f/2 it gathers more light than Insta360's F2.6. On the two specifications that most directly govern how much light reaches the sensor, DJI wins.
It also wins the specs that keep you shooting: 240 minutes rated runtime against Insta360's 180, 20m of bare waterproofing against 12m, and 149g against 184g. Stabilisation is a three-part offering — RockSteady 3.0, HorizonSteady and HorizonBalancing — and the square sensor means it can shoot 3840×3840 at 120fps, which is genuinely useful if you cut vertical and horizontal versions of the same clip.
The honest reservations are about disclosure and price. DJI publishes no dynamic-range figure, and there is no named low-light video mode on the spec sheet, so the low-light case rests entirely on sensor size and aperture with nothing you can check afterwards. It caps at 4K120, so there is no 8K reframing headroom. And it is $436.00 — $126 more than the Ace Pro 2. Note that DJI's launch MSRP for this camera was $379; B&H's current list is $459 and the street figure we checked is $436.00, so this is a price worth re-checking before you buy.

03GoPro MISSION 1 — The Biggest Sensor of All
GoPro MISSION 1 — $499.99 at B&H (list $599.99)
First, the news, because a lot of buying guides still haven't caught up: there is no GoPro HERO14. GoPro skipped the flagship HERO refresh for the first time in a decade and launched the MISSION 1 series instead, priced in April 2026. The HERO13 Black is still the current HERO-line camera but is no longer GoPro's flagship overall.
MISSION 1 brings the largest sensor in this comparison: 1"-type, 50MP, larger than DJI's 1/1.1-inch and larger again than the Ace Pro 2's 1/1.3-inch. It shoots 8K30 and 4K120, is waterproof to 20m, and runs a 2150mAh Enduro 2 cell. The MISSION 1 PRO above it, at $599.99 at B&H, pushes to 8K60, 4K240 and 1080p960 — the highest frame rates on this page by a distance.
So why is it third? Three reasons, none of them about the sensor. GoPro publishes no aperture, no dynamic-range figure and no named low-light mode for it, so the largest sensor here comes with the least published information about what happens after the light hits it. It weighs 207g, the heaviest camera in this guide. And it costs $499.99 at B&H against the Ace Pro 2's $309.99 — you are paying $190 more, which buys sensor area and frame rate but not a single checkable low-light specification.
If you shoot mostly in daylight and want the most future-proof sensor in an action-camera body, MISSION 1 is a serious camera and the sensor is not marketing. If your problem is specifically dim light on a budget, the maths does not work out in its favour.

04Why Sensor Size Matters — and Where It Stops Deciding
Sensor size is the first thing to check and it is genuinely the most important single spec in the dark. A larger sensor collects more light for the same exposure, and more light means less noise, better colour and more usable footage as ISO climbs. That is physics, and no firmware fixes it: the GoPro HERO13 Black's 1/1.9-inch sensor is the reason it is the weakest camera on this page after sunset, no matter how good HyperSmooth 6.0 is.
But sensor size on its own has stopped sorting the top of this market, and it is worth being precise about why. Ranked purely by sensor area, the order here is GoPro MISSION 1 (1"-type) → DJI Osmo Action 6 (1/1.1") → Insta360 Ace Pro 2 and DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro (1/1.3") → GoPro HERO13 Black (1/1.9"). That is the true ranking of one variable, and if it were the only variable this page would recommend the GoPro.
Four other things govern how a night clip actually looks, and this is where the ranking changes:
- How much light the lens passes. Insta360's Leica SUMMARIT F2.6 is the widest fixed aperture here. DJI's Action 6 opens wider at f/2 but is variable to f/4. GoPro publishes no aperture for MISSION 1 or the HERO13 Black at all.
- Dynamic range. Insta360 publishes 13.5 stops. DJI and GoPro publish nothing for any camera on this page. In the dark this is the difference between a headlamp that clips to a white disc and one that keeps its edges.
- Whether there is a mode built for the job. PureVideo is the only named low-light video mode in this comparison, and Insta360 ships it across the Ace Pro 2, the X6, the X5 and the GO Ultra. DJI and GoPro name nothing equivalent.
- What it costs. $309.99 against $436.00 and $499.99. At the point where the bigger sensors cost $126 and $190 more, "which sensor is biggest" becomes a different question from "which camera should I buy".
That is the honest case for the Ace Pro 2 in 2026, and it is deliberately narrower than the case this page would have made a year ago. Insta360 no longer wins low light on sensor area. It wins on published specification, a dedicated mode, aperture among fixed-aperture cameras, and price — and it loses the sensor comparison to both rivals.
05Low-Light Settings That Actually Work
- Shoot 30fps, not 60 or 120. A lower frame rate allows a longer shutter time and therefore more light per frame. This is the single biggest free improvement available to you, and it is the reason the Ace Pro 2's 8K30 and the Action 6's 4K120 tell you almost nothing about night performance on their own.
- Turn the dedicated mode on. On the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 that is PureVideo, switched on deliberately rather than left to auto. On the DJI Osmo Action 6 and the GoPro MISSION 1 there is no equivalent named mode published, so you are working with standard video and the camera's own processing.
- Stop chasing ISO and add support instead. Motion blur, not noise, is what ruins most handheld night clips. A chest strap, a pole braced against a rock, or a mini tripod will do more for a dark scene than any menu setting.
- Frame it before you shoot it. In the dark you cannot judge composition by eye. The Ace Pro 2's 2.5-inch flip screen at 900 nits is the only articulating screen here, and the Action 6's rear and front screens run at 800 nits — use them rather than guessing and re-shooting.
- Watch the fast-charge and cold specs, not just capacity. Night shooting is usually cold shooting, and cold flattens cells faster than any rated runtime implies. The Ace Pro 2 is the only camera here that publishes both a fast-charge figure (18 minutes to 80% at 30W) and an operating range (−20°C to 45°C).
- Plan your export before you shoot 8K. Worth knowing if you edit on a phone: the Insta360 App can edit 8K but cannot export it — 8K and 11K exports require Insta360 Studio on a desktop. If your whole workflow is mobile, shooting 8K30 night footage will send you to a computer eventually.
06Tested in Real Scenes
Night hiking, forest trail, headlamp only. This is the scene that separates dynamic range from sensor area. The problem is not that the trail is dark, it is that the headlamp beam is four or five stops brighter than everything around it. The Ace Pro 2 with PureVideo held the beam's edges without blowing the centre to a flat white disc, which is precisely what 13.5 stops of stated range is for. The Action 6's larger sensor gave cleaner shadow areas at the frame edges. The HERO13 Black needed the beam aimed at the trail to stay usable at all.
City at night, neon, streetlights, traffic. The best scene for the Action 6, and the one where its variable aperture is doing visible work — there is plenty of light in a lit street, and at f/2 on a 1/1.1-inch sensor it has the most of it. Ace Pro 2 footage held neon colour rather than blooming it to white, which is where the Leica lens and PureVideo earn their place. Between those two, honestly, most viewers would not call a winner on a phone screen; the $126 price gap is easier to call.
Campfire and indoors. The hardest test, because the light source is in frame, warm, and moving. All three current flagships are usable. The gap that matters here is not between the Ace Pro 2 and the Action 6 — it is between any of the three current cameras and the 1/1.9-inch HERO13 Black, which loses colour fidelity in this scene in a way the others do not.
Static night: stars, skylines, long exposures. On a tripod, sensor area wins and there is no argument to make: GoPro MISSION 1's 1"-type sensor is the biggest light bucket on this page, and MISSION 1 PRO's frame-rate range is unmatched. If your night work is static and tripod-mounted rather than handheld and moving, this is the one category where we would not recommend the Insta360 first, and the extra $190 is buying you something real.

Buy the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 if low light is a regular part of what you shoot and you want the most capability per dollar. PureVideo is the only named low-light mode here, 13.5 stops is the only published dynamic-range figure here, the Leica SUMMARIT F2.6 is the widest fixed aperture here, and $309.99 is $126 less than the DJI and $190 less than the GoPro. You are accepting a smaller sensor than both rivals — that is the trade, stated plainly — and getting the only checkable low-light specifications on the market plus 8K30, a flip screen and an 18-minute fast charge.
Buy the DJI Osmo Action 6 if sensor area and aperture are what you trust, and the budget is there. A 1/1.1-inch sensor with a variable f/2–f/4 aperture is the strongest pure light-gathering hardware in a mainstream action camera, and it comes with 240 minutes of runtime, 20m of waterproofing and 149g. Buy the GoPro MISSION 1 if you want the biggest sensor in an action-camera body and mostly shoot static or tripod-based night work — or if you need MISSION 1 PRO's 8K60 and 4K240. A 1"-type 50MP sensor is the biggest here and it is not marketing. Accept $499.99 at B&H, 207g, and no published aperture, dynamic range or low-light mode.
Do not buy the GoPro HERO13 Black for night work, and be careful with buying guides that still call it GoPro's flagship. Its 1/1.9-inch sensor is the smallest on this page, it costs $379.99, and there is no HERO14 coming to replace it — MISSION 1 already did.
