You surface, pop the housing, and there's a bead of water sitting on the inside of the lens port. Or you jumped in with the battery door not quite clicked shut. Or you rinsed the camera under a tap and something got past a seal that looked fine.

Water is the most common way a working action camera becomes scrap, and the outcome is decided almost entirely by what you do in the first minute. Not by how expensive the camera is, not by its depth rating, and definitely not by rice.

This guide is the sequence: what to do immediately, how to dry a camera properly, what a depth rating actually protects you against, and when to stop and pay someone. It applies to Insta360, DJI, GoPro and budget cameras alike — and there is a section for the cameras that have no water rating whatsoever, because two of the most popular vlogging cameras on sale right now fall into that category and most owners don't know it.

First 60 Seconds: The Emergency Protocol

You have roughly a minute before corrosion starts, and rather less than that if it was salt water. Do these in order and do not improvise.

◆ Emergency checklist, in order

  1. Cut the power without pressing the power button if you can. Pull the battery. That kills every rail instantly, which is what you want. Do not press power "just to see". Do not press record.
  2. If the battery isn't removable, hold the power button down until it shuts off and then touch nothing else. The Insta360 GO series camera module and most gimbal cams don't give you a battery to pull.
  3. Take the memory card out. Cards are far more water-tolerant than cameras, but the contacts corrode. Pull it, dry it on a microfibre cloth, set it somewhere warm and dry. Your footage is very often recoverable even when the camera isn't. If you shoot on an Insta360 Luna Ultra there is no card to pull — it records to 47GB of internal storage, which means the footage's survival is tied to the camera's.
  4. Shake the water out, gently. Ports facing down, firm flicks of the wrist, not a full-arm swing. You're dislodging pooled water, not centrifuging the mainboard.
  5. Wipe the outside dry with microfibre or a cotton t-shirt. Not paper towel — it sheds fibres into ports and microphone holes.
  6. Open everything. Battery door, USB-C cover, card slot, any HDMI flap. Every opening is an airflow path and you want all of them.
  7. Check and dry the battery contacts. If the cell itself is wet, dry it and set it aside separately. Do not put it back in to test anything.
  8. Now go to drying. The camera stays off, open and battery-free until it is completely dry — minimum 48 hours unless you have desiccant.

◆ Do not, under any circumstances

  • Do not press buttons beyond the single power-off action above
  • Do not plug in a charger. USB-C pins plus water is a direct short across a live rail — this is the single most common way a survivable soaking becomes a dead camera
  • Do not use a hairdryer on heat. Heat deforms the rubber seals you need for next time, and it drives moisture further inside before it evaporates
  • Do not use rice. Why not
  • Do not turn it on to check if it's okay. Whether it's okay is determined 48 hours from now
  • Do not leave it in a sealed camera bag. A humid sealed volume is the opposite of drying

Drying Methods That Actually Work

The camera is off, open and battery-free. Now the only variable that matters is how fast you can get moisture out of a body that was designed to keep it out. Passive evaporation through two small openings is slow, which is why active methods win.

The silica gel method, in detail. Get loose desiccant sachets — the kind that ship inside camera boxes and shoe boxes, sold in bulk online. Put the open camera, the battery and the memory card into an airtight box with a generous handful of sachets, not touching the camera's optics. Silica gel lowers the humidity of the sealed air below the humidity inside the camera body, so moisture migrates out continuously instead of waiting for a breeze. Swap the sachets after about 12 hours if they feel warm, heavy or spent. This is what the manufacturers ship inside their own packaging, and it works for the same reason.

The fan method. A desk fan aimed at the open ports, running continuously for 24 to 48 hours. Slower than desiccant because it can only reach ambient humidity, but completely safe and available in every hotel room. If you're doing this in a humid climate, run it in the driest room you have — a bathroom after a shower is the worst place in the building.

On heat. Never above hand-warm. Action cameras seal with moulded rubber gaskets and adhesive; both are damaged by temperatures a hairdryer reaches in seconds, and a camera that dries out but loses its seal integrity floods properly the next time you take it near water. The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 is rated to operate between −20°C and 45°C, which gives you a sense of the range these bodies are actually designed for.

Why Rice Is Bad Advice

It's the most durable piece of bad tech advice on the internet, and it survives because people who put wet phones in rice sometimes get working phones back — which they would also have got by leaving them on a windowsill.

Not all water is equally destructive, and salt water needs one extra step that feels completely wrong.

◆ Salt water protocol

Salt water leaves crystals behind when it evaporates. Those crystals are conductive enough to bridge contacts and corrosive enough to eat through board traces over the following weeks — which is why cameras "recovered" from the sea often die a month later. You have to get the salt out before you get the water out.

  1. Power off and remove the battery first. Non-negotiable.
  2. Fill a clean bowl with distilled or deionised water. Not tap water — tap water carries its own dissolved minerals and leaves its own residue.
  3. Submerge the camera briefly, five to ten seconds, agitating gently to flush the seams and ports.
  4. Lift out, shake the water clear, and go straight into the silica gel process. No pause, no wiping and waiting.
  5. If you don't want to submerge it — a fogged lens element is a real risk — flush the seams and ports with distilled water from a spray bottle instead.

Yes, you are putting a wet camera into more water. It is the standard procedure for salt-water electronics recovery and it is the difference between a camera that works and a camera that works for three weeks.

And after every ocean session, whether or not anything got in: 30 seconds under a fresh tap, then dry. Salt sitting on the seals degrades the rubber, and a degraded seal is how the next flood happens. Cameras rated for salt water are not rated for salt left on them.

What Your Depth Rating Actually Covers — And the Cameras With None

This is the section most water-damage guides skip, and it's the one that determines whether you ever need the rest of this page.

A depth rating is a factory measurement of a new camera, held still, in clean fresh water, with every seal seated perfectly. It is not a promise. It doesn't survive an impact that flexes the body, a grain of sand across a gasket, a door that isn't fully clicked, or two seasons of salt and UV on the rubber. Treat the number as the ceiling of a brand-new camera in ideal conditions and give yourself a wide margin beneath it.

Two honest notes on that table. DJI wins the depth contest outright — 20m against the Insta360 Ace Pro 2's 12m is a real, meaningful gap, and if you are diving rather than swimming that is the number to buy on. And Insta360 publishes an IP code for the GO Ultra and GO 3S that B&H's own listing contradicts, so we quote the depth figure both agree on and leave the IP code out of it.

◆ "My Insta360 Luna Ultra got wet"

This scenario has its own heading because it is real, it is common, and almost nothing online addresses it.

The Insta360 Luna Ultra is Insta360's most expensive camera at $769.99, and it has no water resistance, no dust resistance and no splash resistance whatsoever. Neither does the DJI Osmo Pocket 3. These are gimbal cameras: the whole design premise is a motorised, exposed 3-axis mechanism, and you cannot seal a moving gimbal the way you seal a solid cube. Owners get caught out constantly, because a $769.99 camera feels like it should tolerate rain.

If a gimbal camera gets wet, the protocol above still applies but with three changes:

  • The gimbal is the vulnerable part, not the ports. Water in the motor bearings and the slip-ring assembly is what kills these cameras. Do not power on to "test whether the gimbal still moves" — that energises the motors with water in them. Leave it limp.
  • Do not try to centre or straighten the gimbal by hand. You'll drive water further into the bearings and you can strip the axis.
  • There's no card to pull on the Luna Ultra. Footage lives on 47GB of internal storage, so if the camera doesn't come back, neither does the footage. If you shoot anywhere near water on a gimbal cam, offload every single day.

The blunt advice: don't take a gimbal camera anywhere it can get rained on. If your shooting involves water at all — surf, kayak, rain, ski, poolside, a boat — buy a rated camera and use the gimbal cam for the dry half of the trip. Insta360's own rated options are the Ace Pro 2 at 12m and the X6 at 20m; DJI's are the Action 5 Pro and Action 6 at 20m.

If you've just drowned an unrated camera and you're replacing it, this is the honest sweet spot: rated to 12m bare, the cheapest of the 2026 flagships, and it takes an 18-minute charge to 80% which matters more than you'd think when you're drying kit in a hotel room. If you need to go deeper than 12 metres, buy the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro at $319.00 for its 20m rating instead — we'd rather you bought the right one.


What You Can Safely Open, and When to Call a Professional

After 48 hours of proper drying — 24 with desiccant — you assess. Two questions: is there anything left you can do yourself, and is powering it on going to finish it off.

What you can open. Action cameras are not designed for user disassembly, and modern bodies from all three brands use adhesive, moulded gaskets and ultrasonic welds that make opening the shell destructive to the water seal. There is a short list of exceptions:

  • The outer lens cover or protector. User-replaceable on all three brands. If water is trapped between the protective glass and the lens itself, take the cover off, dry both faces with microfibre, refit. This is the single most common fixable fault.
  • A removable battery door. Where the door detaches, taking it off during drying meaningfully improves airflow through the battery bay.
  • Mounting fingers, cages and magnetic mount plates. Removing them opens up airflow paths and costs you nothing.

What you must not open. The main body shell — once that seal is broken the camera is never waterproof again without factory gasket work, which is worth more than most of these cameras. The lens assembly, which is optically aligned at the factory and will not go back the same way. And internal ribbon cables, which are fragile, proprietary and unobtainable; one tear is a dead camera.

The one rule that overrides all of this: fog means water, and water plus a warm processor means the moisture goes to the board. A camera that fogs is not a camera you shoot with while you decide what to do.

Prevention: The 30-Second Pre-Water Check

Everything above is recovery. This is the part that means you never need it. It takes half a minute and costs nothing.

◆ Before every water session

  1. Look at the seal on every door. Cracks, deformation, grit. Run a fingertip along the gasket — you will feel a grain of sand you'd never see. One grain is a leak path.
  2. Wipe the seals dry and clean. A single hair lying across a gasket breaks the seal. Microfibre or a lens wipe, every time.
  3. Grease the O-ring if you're using a dive housing. A thin film of silicone O-ring grease on the main seal fills microscopic gaps and stops the ring sticking and tearing. Only on housing O-rings, never on the camera's own door gaskets.
  4. Close doors until they click. All three brands' doors give an audible, tactile click when fully seated. No click, no seal — and this is the cause of the majority of flooded cameras.
  5. Sink-test before a trip that matters. Battery out, card out, camera in a sink of water for five minutes. Bubbles trailing from a seam means that seam leaks. Better to learn it at home.
  6. Rinse fresh after every salt session, even when nothing got in. Salt on the seals is what causes the flood two trips from now.
  7. Offload daily. Especially on internal-storage cameras like the Luna Ultra, where the footage and the camera share a fate.

Warranty and Protection Plans

Read this before you assume you're covered, because most people are not.

Manufacturer warranties treat liquid ingress as accidental damage, not as a defect — including on cameras marketed as waterproof. The reasoning the manufacturers give is consistent across all three brands: waterproofing depends on seals the user maintains, closes and inspects, and they cannot warrant something they don't control. So a flooded camera is normally not a warranty claim, however good the depth rating on the box was.

We deliberately don't quote plan prices or deductibles here. What should I do immediately if water gets into my action camera?

Inside the first minute: pull the battery rather than using the power button, take the memory card out and dry it, shake the water clear with the ports facing down, wipe the outside with microfibre, and open every door and port cover. Then leave it off, open and battery-free for at least 48 hours — 24 if you have silica gel and an airtight box. Never plug in a charger, never apply heat, and never power it on to check whether it survived. Powering on a wet camera is what turns a soaking into a repair bill.

Does putting a wet camera in rice work?

No. Rice absorbs ambient humidity slowly and has no mechanism for drawing water out of a sealed camera body, and its dust and starch get into ports where they hold moisture and can conduct across contacts when damp. Silica gel sachets in an airtight container are dramatically better because they lower the humidity of the air around the camera, so moisture migrates outward continuously. A desk fan aimed at the open ports is the next best thing and is available anywhere.

My Insta360 Luna Ultra got wet — what now?

Treat it as a serious flood, because the Luna Ultra has no water, dust or splash resistance at all — a fact worth knowing before the trip rather than after it. Power it off, don't try to move or centre the gimbal by hand, and don't power it on to see whether the gimbal still works: that energises motors with water in the bearings. Dry it with desiccant for a full 48 hours minimum. Note also that the Luna Ultra records to 47GB of internal storage rather than a memory card, so there is no card to rescue — which is exactly why you offload daily when shooting anywhere near water. The same applies to the DJI Osmo Pocket 3, which is also unrated. If water is part of your shooting, use a rated camera for those sessions: the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 is rated to 12m, the Insta360 X6 and DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro to 20m.

My camera is rated to 10 metres, so why did it flood in a swimming pool?

Because a depth rating describes a new camera, held still, in clean fresh water, with every seal seated perfectly. It doesn't describe your camera after a season of sand, salt and sun, and it doesn't survive a door that wasn't fully clicked or a grain of grit across a gasket. Depth ratings also say nothing about impact — hitting the water hard, or knocking the body against a rock, can flex a seal enough to admit water well inside the rated depth. Use the rating as a ceiling and shoot well under it: check the seal, feel for grit, and listen for the click before every session.

How long should I wait before switching it back on?

48 hours minimum in dry air with active airflow, or 24 hours in a sealed container with silica gel. The single reliable indicator is fog: any haze on the inside of the lens or the screen means there is still liquid water in the body, and powering on then means a warm processor drives that moisture straight onto the board. If fog is still there at 72 hours, the internal seals have likely failed and it needs opening by someone with the right tools. Waiting an extra day costs nothing. Being impatient costs the camera.
