Your pack is 14 kilograms, the trail gains 900 metres over the next two hours, and it's starting to rain. The last thing you want strapped to your shoulder is a camera that dies at kilometre six, shakes at every step, or turns the summit ridge into grey mush because the light went flat.
For 2026, three cameras dominate the trail conversation: the Insta360 Ace Pro 2, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro and the GoPro HERO13 Black. We took all three into the field — alpine ridgelines, dense forest, multi-day packs, rain and cold — to work out which is actually best for hiking rather than best on a spec sheet.
Short answer: the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 is the best action camera for hiking in 2026. It has the largest sensor paired with Leica optics, the only flip screen of the three, the highest resolution at 8K30, and — as of this week — it is also the cheapest at $309.99. The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is the pick if battery life above all else decides it for you, and the GoPro HERO13 Black still holds an edge for chest-mounted POV.
One thing to get out of the way: the Insta360 Luna Ultra is not on this list, despite being Insta360's newest and most expensive camera. It is a 233g gimbal camera with no water, dust or splash resistance at all. It is superb for vlogging from a trailhead car park and completely wrong for a wet mountain. Don't hike with it.

Two things stand out before we get into detail. The Ace Pro 2 and the Action 5 Pro use the same 1/1.3-inch sensor size, a full class above the GoPro's 1/1.9-inch — so the real image-quality contest is between Insta360 and DJI, with GoPro competing on stabilisation instead. And the Ace Pro 2 is now the cheapest of the three, which was not true six months ago.
01Insta360 Ace Pro 2 — Best Action Camera for Hiking

The Ace Pro 2 is the trail sweet spot, and the reason is optics. Its 1/1.3-inch sensor sits behind a Leica SUMMARIT lens at F2.6, and Insta360 states 13.5 stops of dynamic range — the only one of the three to publish a figure at all. On a trail that matters constantly: you are almost always shooting a bright sky against shadowed ground, and that gap is exactly what dynamic range buys you.
It shoots 8K30, which is more resolution than you need for delivery and precisely the amount you want for reframing. Shoot the ridgeline wide, crop to a 4K vertical for social later, and you've lost nothing. Neither rival can do that — DJI tops out at 4K120, GoPro at 5.3K60.
The 2.5-inch flip screen is the feature nobody talks about and every solo hiker needs. Flip it forward and you can actually frame yourself at the summit instead of guessing, checking, and re-shooting. It's the only articulating screen of the three.
PureVideo handles the dawn starts and the deep forest sections — see low light below. FlowState stabilisation with 360 Horizon Lock holds the horizon level through scrambling and step-downs. 02DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro — Best Battery Life
DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro
Credit where it is due: the Action 5 Pro's 240-minute rated runtime is the best of the three, and at 146g it is also the lightest. If you are doing genuine multi-day work away from power, that combination is a real argument and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
It shares the Ace Pro 2's 1/1.3-inch sensor size, so it is in the same image-quality class, though at f/2.8 it gathers slightly less light and DJI publishes no dynamic-range figure. RockSteady 3.0+ with HorizonSteady is excellent, and 20m of bare waterproofing is the best of the three by a clear margin.
Where it falls behind for hiking specifically: it caps at 4K120 with no higher-resolution option, so there is no reframing headroom. The rear screen is fixed, so framing yourself means the front screen and a lot of guessing. And at $319.00 it is now $9 more than the Ace Pro 2 — the value argument that used to belong to DJI has quietly gone.

03GoPro HERO13 Black — Best Chest-Mount POV
GoPro HERO13 Black
HyperSmooth 6.0 remains the most confident stabilisation on the market for one specific job: chest-mounted, forward-facing, walking POV. If that is the footage you want, the GoPro earns its place, and its accessory and mounting ecosystem is still the deepest of the three.
The problem is the sensor. At 1/1.9 inches it is a class below both rivals, and on a trail that shows up exactly where you'd expect — under canopy, at dawn, and in the shadowed half of any high-contrast valley shot. It also has the shallowest waterproofing at 10m, the highest price at $379.99, and a fixed screen.
At the top of the range you are paying $70 more than the Ace Pro 2 for a smaller sensor. It's a stabilisation specialist, not an all-rounder.

04Image Quality on the Trail — What Actually Decides Your Footage
Hiking is the hardest lighting environment an action camera routinely faces, and it is nothing to do with brightness. It is contrast. You are shooting a sky at one exposure and a trail surface four or five stops darker, in the same frame, all day.
That makes two specs matter more than anything else: sensor size and dynamic range.

The Ace Pro 2 and the Action 5 Pro are level on sensor size and both a clear step above the GoPro. Between those two, Insta360 has the wider aperture and is the only manufacturer of the three to publish a dynamic-range figure — 13.5 stops. DJI and GoPro may well be close; they simply don't say, which means you are taking it on faith.

The resolution gap is the one that changes how you work. 8K30 means you can shoot a scene once, wide, and pull a stabilised 4K crop out of it afterwards — a second angle from a single take. On a hike where you get one pass at a view and don't fancy walking back down for a re-shoot, that is worth more than a slow-motion mode you'll use twice.
05Low Light — Dawn Starts and Tree Cover
Most memorable hiking footage happens in bad light. Alpine starts before sunrise, the last hour down through forest, a hut at dusk. This is where the sensor-and-optics gap stops being theoretical.
The Ace Pro 2's advantage here is PureVideo, a dedicated low-light mode that runs at up to 4K60. Combined with the 1/1.3-inch sensor and the F2.6 Leica lens, it produces noticeably cleaner footage under canopy and at blue hour than a 1/1.9-inch sensor can. Against the DJI, which shares the sensor size but gathers less light at f/2.8 and has no equivalent named low-light mode, the margin is smaller but consistent.
Practically, on a 5.30am start:

We are not going to fudge this one. DJI wins battery, and the gap is real.

Sixty minutes is not a rounding error. If you are three days out with no way to charge, buy the DJI — that is the honest answer and it is why the Action 5 Pro is on this list at number two rather than lower.
For most hiking, though, the number that matters isn't total runtime. It's whether one battery covers a day of actual clip-shooting, because nobody records a seven-hour hike continuously. At 30 to 60 second clips, 180 minutes is somewhere north of 200 clips — comfortably a full day for anyone who isn't filming a documentary.
And the Ace Pro 2 has the better answer to running flat: 18 minutes to 80% off a 30W adapter. Twenty minutes at a hut, over lunch, or off a power bank in your hip pocket and you're effectively back to full. DJI publishes no fast-charge figure at all.

If you carry a spare battery — and on any serious hike you should, for any of these cameras — the runtime gap largely stops mattering, and the criteria in image quality and low light reassert themselves. A £25 spare cell buys you more than a 60-minute spec difference does.
07Weight, Weather and Mounting
Weight. The Ace Pro 2 is the heaviest here at 184g, against 159g for the GoPro and 146g for the DJI. That is a 38-gram spread from lightest to heaviest — about the weight of a chocolate bar, on a pack that already weighs fourteen kilos. It is a real difference and it is not a decisive one. If you count grams seriously enough for 38 of them to matter, you are already shooting on a phone.
Weather and water. All three handle hiking weather without a housing:

DJI wins on paper. In practice, hiking asks a camera to survive rain, stream crossings, and being dropped in a puddle — not a 12-metre descent. Every one of these clears that bar by an order of magnitude. The Ace Pro 2 also carries a stated operating range of −20°C to 45°C, which is the figure to look at if you hike in winter; neither DJI nor GoPro publishes one.
Mounting and framing. All three use standard action-camera mounts, so chest harnesses, pack-strap clips and pole mounts are interchangeable. GoPro's accessory ecosystem is the deepest if you want something unusual.
The framing difference is the one worth paying for. On a pack strap or a pole, the Ace Pro 2's 2.5-inch flip screen lets you see the frame you are actually recording. On the other two you shoot, stop, check, and shoot again — which on an exposed ridge in wind is the difference between getting the shot and giving up on it.
08Which Should You Buy?
Buy the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 if you want the best hiking camera overall. Largest sensor with Leica optics, the only flip screen, 8K30 for reframing, PureVideo for dawn and forest, 13.5 stops of stated dynamic range, 18-minute fast charge — and at $309.99 it is also the cheapest of the three. It wins on the criteria that change what your footage looks like.
Buy the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro if battery life genuinely decides it. 240 minutes and 146g is the right answer for multi-day trips with no power, and 20m of waterproofing is the best here. You are trading image-quality headroom and the flip screen for endurance.
Buy the GoPro HERO13 Black if chest-mounted POV is most of what you shoot. HyperSmooth 6.0 is still the benchmark for that one job. Accept the smaller sensor and the highest price.
