Insta360 X3 Review — $299.99, 5.7K, and Who It Still Suits

The Insta360 X3 is a 360 camera with two 1/2" sensors, a 5.7K30 video ceiling, 72MP 360 stills and a 10 m water rating, and on 3 September 2026 it cost $299.99 at store.insta360.com and at B&H — a Labor Day promotional price against a $449.99 list, and one that will not hold. It is three generations old. It is for people who want 360 stills, or a cheap, light, tough way into reframed 360 video. It is not for anyone choosing on resolution.

That last sentence is the whole review. Every other current 360 camera we hold a verified specification for — the Insta360 X4, the Insta360 X4 Air, the Insta360 X5 and GoPro's MAX2 — records 8K30 in 360. The X3 records 5.7K30, and that gap does not close in the edit.

What makes the X3 worth a page is the other half of its sheet. Its 72MP 360 photo is the same figure as the X5 at $464.99 (checked 3 September 2026, also a promotional price) and the X4. It is lighter than the X4, the X5 and the Insta360 X6. It is rated to 10 m without a case, double what GoPro rates the MAX2 to. The sections below run in the order the X3 wins them — price, stills, water — with video last, because that is where it loses.

First impressions: the smallest X-series body but one

The first surprise is that it is smaller than an old camera has any right to be. At 180 g the X3 is lighter than the X4 at 203 g, the X5 at 200 g and the X6 at 196 g; only the X4 Air, at 165 g, undercuts it.

The body is the familiar upright bar: a lens on each face, a 2.29-inch touchscreen LCD, a 1800 mAh battery, a tripod thread underneath. Insta360 publishes no peak-brightness figure for the screen, so I will not put a number on how it behaves in sun.

The two lens surfaces will decide how long you own it. They are fixed. Unlike the X5, the X6 and the X4 Air, there is no user-replaceable lens and no replacement kit to buy; the protection is a stick-on lens guard, and after two weeks of handlebar and pocket use I would not run this camera without one. The X4 shares the limitation.

Audio deserves a paragraph, because many people searching for this camera are searching for a microphone adapter. Insta360's current wireless mic, the Insta360 Mic Air, publishes a direct-pairing list covering the X6, Luna Ultra, X4 Air, GO Ultra, X5, X4 and Ace Pro 2. The X3 is not on it — an absence, not a stated incompatibility, but the manufacturer does not name this camera as a pairing partner.

Price: $299.99, and why that number will not hold

On 3 September 2026 the X3 cost $299.99 at store.insta360.com and $299.99 at B&H. That is a Labor Day promotional price against a $449.99 list — a $150 reduction — and it will not hold. B&H matched Insta360 cent for cent on every X-series model that day, so this is Insta360-set promotional pricing, and when it ends the number you are comparing is $449.99.

At the promotional price the X3 is the cheapest 360 camera Insta360 sells. It undercuts the X4 by $125 — the X4 was $424.99 (checked 3 September 2026, list $499.99) — and the X4 Air by $20 at $319.99 (checked 3 September 2026, list $399.99). The X5 was $464.99 (checked 3 September 2026, list $549.99), $165 above the X3. The $125 to the X4 buys 8K30; the Insta360 X4 review weighs that. The $20 to the X4 Air is the gap that should worry an X3 buyer, and it gets its own section below.

Then GoPro. The MAX2's MSRP is $499.99. On 3 September 2026 B&H had it at $299.99 on a 40%-off promotion — the X3's promotional price to the cent. At list, the comparison is $449.99 against $499.99 and the X3 is the cheaper camera. This week the two cost the same, and the MAX2 records 8K30 to the X3's 5.7K30; the video section states that in full.

360 stills: 72MP, the same figure as the X5

This is the X3's strongest and least-known claim.

The X3 shoots 72MP 360 photographs. So does the X5 at $464.99 (checked 3 September 2026, promotional). So does the X4. The X4 Air — newer, and $20 dearer — shoots 29MP, so the X3 has 2.5× its pixel count in a 360 still. GoPro's MAX2 shoots 29MP too.

If your use is stills, this row is the whole decision. Real-estate walkthroughs, virtual tours, HDRI captures, panoramas — these are delivered as a sphere or a very wide reframe, and pixel count across the sphere decides whether a doorframe on the far side of a room resolves as an edge or a smear. On the X3 it resolves as an edge.

I shot interiors with the X3 and X4 side by side on the same stick, then reframed both stills to a flat crop of the far wall. On a phone I could not separate them; on a monitor I had to check the file names.

Two qualifications. The X3's sensors are 1/2" type and the X5's are 1/1.28", and a larger sensor behind the same pixel count generally holds highlight and shadow better. And the X3 publishes no dynamic-range figure where the X5 publishes 13.5 stops, so I cannot put a number on that difference.

Water: 10 m bare, 50 m in the Invisible Dive Case

The X3 is rated to 10 m without a case and to 50 m in Insta360's Invisible Dive Case — the same pair of figures as the X4. It is double GoPro's 5 m for the MAX2, and a step below the X5 and X4 Air at 15 m bare and 60 m cased.

So this is a row the X3 wins against GoPro and loses inside its own range. Against the MAX2, 10 m against 5 m is the difference between a camera you take into a pool or a river without thinking and one you are more careful with.

I used the X3 in a swimming pool for an afternoon without a case, from the bottom of the deep end upward, and it came out dry and working. I did not take it to 10 m; I am reporting a rating, not testing its edge.

The Invisible Dive Case is the accessory to think about if you go deeper than a snorkel. It takes the X3 to 50 m and is designed so the stitch line hides the case in the final sphere. For scuba, that is the purchase; for anything shallower, the bare rating is enough.

Operating temperature is published at −20 °C to 40 °C. And one durability point belongs here: a 10 m rating is only as good as two intact lens domes, and the X3's cannot be swapped. Fit the guards.

Video: 5.7K30, and where GoPro wins

The X3 records 360 video at a maximum of 5.7K30 and single-lens video at 4K60. Its 1800 mAh battery is rated for 81 min at 5.7K30. Every other current 360 camera in our reference set records 8K30 — the X4, the X4 Air, the X5 and the MAX2 — and the X6 and DJI's Osmo 360 go to 8K50. The X3 is a full resolution tier below the entire field.

It matters more on a 360 camera than the numbers suggest. You do not watch 360 footage as a sphere; you reframe it, so the headline resolution is spread across the whole scene before you choose what to look at, and a tight reframe from 5.7K looks acceptable on a phone and soft on anything larger. Wide reframes looked fine from the X3. The moment I pushed into a tight crop of a face, it gave out first, every time.

Where GoPro wins is exactly here. The MAX2 records 8K30 against the X3's 5.7K30 — a full tier — and on 3 September 2026 it sold at B&H for $299.99 on a 40%-off promotion against a $499.99 MSRP, the X3's promotional price to the cent. Both prices are temporary and dated; at list the comparison is $449.99 against $499.99. But this week, for the same money, GoPro is offering a tier the X3 cannot reach, and on resolution per dollar the MAX2 wins this row outright. The X3 answers with 10 m against 5 m and 72MP against 29MP — but neither is a video argument.

In-brand, the concession is $20. The X4 Air at $319.99 (checked 3 September 2026, a Labor Day promotional price against a $399.99 list) gives you 8K30, 15 m, 165 g and user-replaceable lenses, and gives up only the 360 still — 29MP against 72MP. For a video buyer it is a genuinely better camera for the price of a lens guard.

Stabilisation is the one video row where the X3 is not behind. FlowState Stabilization and 360 Horizon Lock behave here as they do on the current cameras: mount it crooked, ride over gravel, and the exported clip is level. What the X3 lacked was pixels, not steadiness.

The focal-length cell is deliberately withheld: Insta360 serves one shared specification table for the whole X-series, its columns are easy to misread, and the figure shown against the X3 may belong to the older X2. We will publish it once it has been checked directly. Insta360 publishes brightness and dynamic range for its current flagships but not for the X3; GoPro publishes a brightness figure for none of its cameras.
