The Insta360 X5 is an 8K30 360 camera rated to 15 m without a case, with a published dynamic range of 13.5 stops and a price of $464.99 (checked 3 September 2026 — a Labor Day promotion against a $549.99 list price, so expect it to move). It is the camera most people mean when they say "an Insta360", and the right buy for anyone who wants 360 footage near water, on a bike or on a helmet without paying for the top of the range.
Mine has lived on a handlebar, on the end of an invisible selfie stick held out over a swell, on a chest mount on a wet trail, and on a rock at the tideline while I swam back to it. That is what this camera is built for, and it is where most of this review lives.
The short version: the X5 wins on the things you can check — depth rating, sensor size, a published dynamic-range figure, battery endurance and lenses you can replace yourself — and loses on two things you can also check. The DJI Osmo 360 shoots 8K50 to the X5's 8K30 on a larger sensor. The GoPro MAX2 is cheaper. Both are set out properly below.
One more thing up front, because the title promises it: Insta360 does not publish a peak-brightness figure for the X5's screen. It publishes one for the X6. That is the honest limitation of this camera, and it gets its own callout rather than a footnote.

The X5 takes the first three rows outright. The Osmo 360 wins the resolution row and the weight row. The MAX2 wins on price at MSRP, and by a wide margin on its current promotion. That is the review in one table; the rest is the reasoning.
First Impressions: What the Object Is Actually Like
At 200 g the X5 is a tall, narrow bar with a lens bulging from each face and a 2.5-inch LCD on the front. It sits in a jacket pocket like a large phone, and on a handlebar or helmet mount without feeling like a liability.
The screen is a 2.5-inch LCD at 440×696 — tall and thin, which suits a camera you mostly hold vertically — and the touch response is quick enough that changing mode never becomes a chore. What Insta360 does not tell you is how bright it is; more on that below.
The single most important physical fact about this camera is that the lenses are replaceable. The old lens comes off, a new one goes on. That sounds like a footnote until you have owned a 360 camera without it: a 360 lens is a hemisphere of glass protruding from both sides of the body, it is the first thing to hit the ground when the camera falls, and on fixed optics a deep scratch is, in practice, a dead camera. The X4 below the X5 in the range cannot do this. The X5 can, and I stopped babying it once I understood that.
Depth: 15 m Without a Case
This is the X5's cleanest win, so it goes first.
The X5 is rated to 15 m without any housing. Insta360 frames that as a 50% improvement over the X4's 10 m, and for once the marketing arithmetic is straightforward. The GoPro MAX2 is rated to 5 m; the DJI Osmo 360 to 10 m. Against the MAX2 that is a 3× gap on a published figure, and it is the sort of gap that decides where you are willing to take the camera.

What 15 m means in practice is not "diving". It means you stop thinking about water. I have held this camera under a breaking wave on a stick, dropped it off a paddleboard into a harbour and fished it out, and left it recording on the sand where the tide reached it. None of that comes near the rating. Five metres, by contrast, is what a confident swimmer duck-dives to without trying, and a camera rated there is one you keep on a float.
For anything deeper, the Invisible Dive Case takes the X5 to 60 m with the housing hidden in the stitch. I did not take it there and will not pretend I did; the bare rating covers everything a swimmer, surfer or kayaker will do to it. The published operating range is −20 °C to 40 °C.
Stabilisation shares this criterion in the site's scoring, so it goes here. FlowState Stabilization on a 360 camera does not have to crop to stabilise — the camera has already captured everything — so reframed footage from a rough trail comes out steady, and 360 Horizon Lock holds the horizon flat even through a full rotation on a handlebar. On this camera it is close to a solved problem.
Sensor and Dynamic Range: 13.5 Stops, Published
The X5 has two 1/1.28" sensors behind F2.0 lenses. The GoPro MAX2 has two 1/2.3" sensors — a figure that comes from retailers, because GoPro does not publish it. The DJI Osmo 360 has a 1/1.1" sensor, larger than the X5's.

The dynamic-range row is the one to read twice. Insta360 publishes 13.5 stops for the X5 in its specifications. GoPro publishes no figure for the MAX2 — not a lower number, no number. DJI has claimed 13.5 stops for the Osmo 360, but only in a press release; it is absent from DJI's own spec table, and this site treats a launch-day claim differently from a specification. The X5 is the only camera of the three whose dynamic range you can check against the manufacturer's own spec table.
That is a disclosure point; here is the image-quality point. Shooting a harbour at dusk with the sun low and the water bright, the X5 held the sky and kept legible detail in the shadowed hulls. Reframed to a flat view, the footage looks like it came from a proper camera rather than a novelty one. Colour is neutral out of the camera and grades well.
Maximum 360 video is 8K30 at 7680×3840, with 25 and 24 fps options at the same resolution. Single-lens mode — one side of the camera used as a conventional wide action camera — tops out at 4K60. 360 photos are 72MP at 11904×5952.
Where DJI wins is resolution and sensor, and it should be said plainly. The Osmo 360 shoots 8K50 to the X5's 8K30 on a larger 1/1.1" sensor, for a US retail price $55 higher on the day we checked. If you want the most 360 pixels per second on the largest sensor, the Osmo 360 is genuinely better on both published figures. Two caveats belong in the same breath. DJI does not officially sell the Osmo 360 in the USA — $519.99 is a B&H price, DJI publishes no US price, and warranty for a US buyer is less certain. And it is rated to 10 m against the X5's 15 m, so the resolution win costs depth.
Battery: 93 Minutes at 8K30, 208 in Endurance Mode
The X5 carries a 2400 mAh battery, and Insta360 publishes two runtime figures for it: 93 min at 8K30, and 208 min at 5.7K24 in Endurance Mode. The second is the longest published runtime in the X-series.

The MAX2 row is empty because GoPro publishes no rated runtime for the camera. That is worth stating rather than smoothing over: there is no GoPro figure to put beside the Insta360 one.
The two X5 figures describe two different cameras, in effect. At 8K30 you get a morning's riding with the camera off between sections, or one long take with a margin; on a full day I carried a spare and used it. Endurance Mode at 5.7K24 is a long paddle or most of a hike on one battery, at a resolution that still reframes to a clean flat video.
In use the published figures held up. The one behaviour worth knowing is that 8K30 in warm sun on a static mount warms the body noticeably; it never stopped recording on me, but it is a reason to shoot 5.7K24 unless you need the 8K crop room. The battery swaps behind the latched door in seconds.
Ease of Use and the App: Shoot First, Frame Later
A 360 camera is bought for one workflow: mount it or hold it on a stick, frame nothing, and decide later in the app where the camera was pointing. The X5 does this as well as anything on the market, and the reasons are mostly software.
The invisible selfie stick is the feature that sells the format. Because each lens sees past the stick, the stitch removes it and the camera appears to float behind you, in front of you or above you. Shooting downhill with the camera hanging in the air in front of my face is still a small piece of magic. The stitch handled the stick cleanly in every clip; the seam only shows when something is within arm's reach of both lenses at once.
Reframing happens in the Insta360 app: scrub the sphere, set keyframes for where the virtual camera points, render a flat video. DeepTrack will lock onto a person or a vehicle and follow it, which for a solo rider is the difference between a usable clip and an evening of manual keyframing. Two honest notes. 8K export is a desktop job in Insta360 Studio, not a phone job. And the workflow takes an evening to learn; the people who return 360 cameras are usually the people who expected to point and shoot.
Now the screen. It is a 2.5-inch LCD at 440×696, perfectly usable in shade and indoors. Insta360 does not publish a peak-brightness figure for it. It does publish one for the X6 — 1200 nits — so this is not company policy, it is a gap on this one camera. In direct midday sun the screen is legible if you shade it with a hand and hard to read if you do not. That is a description from use, because there is no measurement to quote.

The brightness row is the one to notice. A spec table that only shows gaps in rivals' disclosure is an advert. Insta360 publishes brightness for the X6 and not for the X5, and the table says so.

The Honest Limitation
Two things the X5 does not give you, and the cameras that do.
Insta360 publishes no peak-brightness figure for the X5's screen — a blank where a number should be, on a camera you will read outdoors. And the X5 shoots 8K30 where the X6 above it shoots 8K50. If sunlight legibility or 8K frame rate decides it for you, the X6 publishes 1200 nits and 8K50; the X5 publishes nothing on brightness and shoots 8K30.
The rivals also win specific rows. Where MAX2 wins: price. GoPro's MSRP is $499.99 against the X5's $549.99 list, and on the day we checked B&H had the MAX2 at $299.99 on a promotion — a far larger gap, for as long as it runs. Where DJI wins: the Osmo 360 shoots 8K50 on a larger 1/1.1" sensor and weighs 183 g to the X5's 200 g, at a B&H price $55 above the X5's current promotional price.

Who Should Buy the Insta360 X5
Buy the X5 if the camera is going to get wet, dropped or scraped. The 15 m rating, the replaceable lenses and the published 13.5 stops are the three specifications that separate it from the GoPro MAX2, and all three are checkable in the manufacturers' own documents. For a surfer, a paddler, a mountain biker or anyone who mounts a camera on a motorcycle and forgets about it, this is the 360 camera to buy at $464.99 (checked 3 September 2026, a Labor Day promotion against a $549.99 list price).
Buy it, too, if you shoot long. 208 min in Endurance Mode is the longest published runtime in Insta360's 360 range, and no rival on this page publishes a figure to set against it.
Do not buy the X5 if you want the most resolution available. The DJI Osmo 360's 8K50 on a 1/1.1" sensor is the better published specification, and if you can live with 10 m, a camera not officially sold in the USA and a retailer's price rather than a manufacturer's, it is the better tool for that one job.
Do not buy the X5 if price is the whole decision. The GoPro MAX2 at $499.99 MSRP — and far below it on its current promotion — shoots the same 8K30 in 360. You give up 15 m for 5 m, a larger sensor, and any published figure for dynamic range or runtime; for some buyers that trade is fine, and we would not argue with anyone who made it knowingly.
