Insta360 Ace Pro 2 Review — The $309.99 Leica Action Camera

The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 is a $309.99 action camera (checked 3 September 2026, against a $399.99 list price) with Leica optics, a 1/1.3" sensor, 8K30 video and a flip-up touchscreen. It is for anyone who wants flagship-class footage without paying GoPro's flagship price — and especially for anyone who films themselves, because the flip screen is the one thing no other camera in this comparison has.

GoPro's current flagship, the MISSION 1, carries a $599.99 MSRP. The HERO13 Black is $399.99. The DJI Osmo Action 6 was $416 at B&H on the check date, and DJI does not officially sell it in the USA at all.

Two weeks with it: a week of bike commuting, three cold mornings on a hillside, a lot of talking to the flip screen, and an afternoon in a river.

The short version: this is the action camera most people should buy in 2026, and not the best-specified one. The MISSION 1 has a larger sensor and publishes more dynamic range, for $290 more. The Osmo Action 6 is lighter, dives deeper and runs longer. Both are true, both are in the tables below, and the rest of this review is about whether they matter to you.

The Six Specs That Decide It

Price leads because it is the largest verified gap on this site. Bold marks the strongest published figure in each row where one can be determined.

Three of those cells are not the Ace Pro 2's: the MISSION 1 wins dynamic range and sensor size, the Osmo Action 6 wins screen brightness. Each is taken seriously below.

First Impressions

Out of the box it is a squarer, taller object than a GoPro, and heavier than it looks. Insta360 publishes 184 g; B&H lists 177.2 g, and we use the manufacturer's figure because it is the less flattering one. Either way it has more heft than the DJI Osmo Action 6 at 149 g or the GoPro HERO13 Black at 159 g, and noticeably less than the GoPro MISSION 1 at 207 g.

Your thumb goes to the screen hinge first. The 2.5-inch touchscreen flips up to face forward, stays where you put it, and two weeks of opening it on a bike and in gloves did not loosen it. It is the one design decision that separates the Ace Pro 2 from every other camera here, and to anyone who talks to the camera it is worth more than any line on the spec sheet.

The Leica badge is not decoration: the optics are co-engineered with Leica at F2.6, and the hard lens surround took knocks against a handlebar mount without marking. Behind it is a 1/1.3" sensor — large for an action camera, and smaller than what GoPro and DJI fit to their most expensive models.

Stabilisation is FlowState Stabilization with 360 Horizon Lock. Neither is a number, and no rival publishes one for its own system either, so this section says only what testing can: over broken tarmac the footage held level, horizon lock kept the frame upright through a full turn of the bars, and I saw no edge warping. Whether it beats GoPro's or DJI's is not something a published figure can settle.

Price: $309.99 Against $599.99

The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 costs $309.99 at Insta360's store and at B&H, checked 3 September 2026, against a $399.99 list price. That discount was live during Labor Day retailer pricing and may not hold.

GoPro's current flagship is the MISSION 1. GoPro skipped its usual HERO-line refresh this year and launched the MISSION 1 series above the HERO13 Black at a $599.99 MSRP. GoPro sells it for less to subscribers, but a subscriber price is a bundle price, not the camera's, and this site compares MSRPs. The MISSION 1 PRO is $699.99. The HERO13 Black is $399.99 MSRP and was $379.99 at B&H on the check date.

So the Ace Pro 2 is $290 cheaper than GoPro's flagship — roughly half the price. Against DJI the picture is different in kind. The Osmo Action 6 was $416 at B&H on 3 September 2026, but DJI publishes no US price for it and does not sell it through its own US channels, so that $416 is a retailer's number.

The only camera here that matches the Ace Pro 2 on both resolution and stills, the MISSION 1, costs $290 more. The only camera near its price, the HERO13 Black, shoots 5.3K60, publishes neither a brightness nor a dynamic range figure, and is rated to 10 m.

Value is 10% of our score, deliberately — a cheap camera that shoots badly should not be rescued by its price. It is the criterion the Ace Pro 2 wins most decisively.

Cold Weather: A Published Operating Range

Insta360 publishes an operating range of −20 °C to 45 °C for the Ace Pro 2 — the number that says whether the manufacturer will stand behind the camera on a ski lift or a winter summit, and the one a warranty conversation turns on.

It is not unique, and this review will not pretend it is. GoPro publishes exactly the same −20 to 45 °C range for the MISSION 1 and MISSION 1 PRO, so on this criterion the two flagships are level.

Further down the range the brands part company. The HERO13 Black has no operating-temperature figure on GoPro's own product page; the −10 to 35 °C quoted for it comes from B&H's listing, a weaker thing to plan a winter trip around. DJI publishes a range for the Osmo Action 6; we have not verified it for this page.

Three September mornings on a hillside are not −20 °C, and I will not claim a cold test I did not do; a freezer test is on the list for winter. What a published range gives you meanwhile is a commitment to hold the manufacturer to. The Ace Pro 2 and the MISSION 1 make it. On GoPro's own pages, the HERO13 Black does not.

Screen, Optics and Image Quality

The 2.5-inch flip touchscreen runs at a published 900 nits. In direct September sun I could frame a piece to camera without cupping a hand over it. GoPro publishes no brightness figure for any camera it currently sells. That is not proof its screens are dim; it is proof you cannot check.

DJI does publish, and here DJI wins. The Osmo Action 6's 2.5" rear screen is rated at 1000 nits peak against the Ace Pro 2's 900, and the Action 6 wins this row. What it lacks is a screen that flips to face you; for vlogging I would take the articulation over the brightness gap, but that is a judgement about use, and the number is DJI's.

The optics are Leica-branded at F2.6 in front of a 1/1.3" sensor. On aperture the Ace Pro 2 is wider than the MISSION 1's F2.8 and narrower than the HERO13 Black's retailer-sourced f/2.5; the Osmo Action 6's variable f/2.0–f/4.0 is the widest maximum here. On sensor size the Ace Pro 2 loses to both expensive cameras — the MISSION 1's 1"-type and the Action 6's 1/1.1" are larger — and beats the HERO13 Black's 1/1.9".

Video tops out at 8K30, tying the MISSION 1 and Action 6 and beating the HERO13 Black's 5.3K60; stills are 50MP against the HERO13 Black's 27.6MP. Only the MISSION 1 PRO goes further, at 8K60 and 4K240, for $699.99.

Dynamic range is where the honesty bill arrives. Insta360 publishes 13.5 stops. GoPro publishes 14 stops for the MISSION 1 and MISSION 1 PRO, and GoPro wins that criterion. DJI claims 13.5 stops for the Action 6 only in a press release, absent from its own spec table, so we treat it as marketing rather than specification. The HERO13 Black publishes nothing. If dynamic range is the number you buy on, the Insta360 answer is the Insta360 X6 at a published 14.5 stops and 8K50 — a 360 camera, not a like-for-like alternative.

Battery and Charging: Where DJI Wins

Insta360 rates the Ace Pro 2 at 180 min and charges it to 80% in 18 min. Two weeks of commuting meant top-ups between rides rather than overnight charges, and an 18 min café stop put the camera back to four-fifths.

Where DJI wins, and wins clearly: the Osmo Action 6 is rated at 240 min against 180 min, to 20 m against 12 m, and weighs 149 g against 184 g. Those are published figures and DJI's advantage is real on every one. This page will not use DJI's absence from official US sale to look away from them: availability is a fact about buying the camera, and runtime, depth and weight are facts about the camera.

On depth, the MISSION 1 is rated to 20 m and the HERO13 Black to 10 m; GoPro's runtimes are quoted by resolution rather than as a single rated figure, and the full table says so rather than converting them.

The camera came out of the river working, which tests the sealing rather than the 12 m figure. For anyone around water rather than under it, 12 m without a housing is plenty; for anyone going under it, the Action 6 and MISSION 1 at 20 m are genuinely better, and Insta360's dive case is the route deeper — we have not verified its rating for this page.

Where GoPro wins: the MISSION 1 publishes 14 stops against the Ace Pro 2's 13.5 and wins this row outright; so does the MISSION 1 PRO. Where GoPro goes quiet: no peak-brightness figure for any camera it sells, and no dynamic range figure outside the MISSION 1 line; the HERO13 Black publishes neither. Those blanks are GoPro's, not ours.
